During the fall, the saying “it’s not about the destination but how you get there” is absolutely true. Traveling during the fall is not only a time to avoid the large summer crowds but to also see amazing foliage on the way. Here are some of the best fall foliage drives around the U.S. you can take this fall.
Minnesota to Wisconsin
Personally, one of my favorite routes to travel in the fall is along the Mississippi River from Red Wing, Minnesota, down to La Crosse, Wisconsin. During the journey you can see the beautiful colors from elm, oak, and maple trees, lining your path to the destination. Between October 10th and the 15th, the colors peak, making the gold and red really pop out at you during your travels. If you are thinking of taking this trip, I suggest staying in Winona, Minnesota and La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Georgia
If you’re not ready to face the cold weather of fall but still want to see beautiful foliage, take a trip to Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Mountains run along the Chattahoochee River. This route also has great places to visit such as the village of Helen, which celebrates Oktoberfest and Brasstown Bald, which is the highest natural point in Georgia. Going to Brasstown Bald will give you a foliage vantage point. If you are tired of driving and want to stretch your legs, go for a hike at Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests.
New York
A lot of you are probably asking how can New York have the some of the best foliage around the United States. That is because most of your attention is drawn to the city aspect of New York. Take a trip outside of the city and visit the Finger Lakes for the foliage and a country feel. Wind your way through state parks and take in the mountain scenery and end up in the Finger Lakes region near Ithaca. During this trip, there are opportunities to visit wineries, go on boat cruises, explore farmers markets, and much more
Washington
Make your way around the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Driving through the coast of Washington, you can see the beautiful views of Olympic National Park and its mountains and lush forests. You could also take a boat detour to Vashon or Whidbey Islands. Experience concerts, tours, shows, and more while traveling around the peninsula and soaking in all of the vibrant fall colors.
